Come to the Opera

Why Chicken Opera?

Chicken Opera is a farm small in size and abundant in ambition.  We are dedicated to variety and diversity of product, humane treatment of  fowl, and stewardship of the land. We use no synthetic pesticides or herbicides on our crops, no antibiotics or growth hormones for the birds. We have ringed our property with pollinator habitat to encourage biodiversity and pollination of our fruit. Our goal is to raise nutritious, delicious food for your table while creating a challenging, dynamic homestead for us.

The word Opera translates to work in Latin. When we hear the word today, Opera conjures images and sounds of dramatic musical work. In an opera there are arias, choruses, stories of love, comedy, and tragedy. For us, our farm is an opera. Nature is the stage, we are the singers hard at work acting our chosen parts. We are city folk turned farmers without much of an audition or experience, just the desire and opera sized ambition to give it a whirl.

As the curtain rises this season we continue the dramatization of love, comedy, and the inherent tragedy of opera. We have raised chickens for eggs for many years and can’t imagine a farm without them. They are colorful, comic birds befitting a part in our opera. Our long-term goal is to establish a berry and fruit farm, but in the interlude between planting and fruition, chickens and their brethren are our comedy, our workers, and a great tragedy—one of our delicious products.
